Every dog

A catalog of dog breeds and landraces sorted by the job each was bred for: origin, original work, size, lifespan and a health note for every one.

For little learners (K–5)

All dogs come from wolves. People chose dogs for jobs: some find birds, some pull sleds, some herd sheep, some just sit on laps. Find a dog with a job you would like to have.

1859 to today

Most breeds are young

historybiology

Dogs have lived with people for at least 15,000 years, but most of the breeds in this catalog are less than 150 years old. The first dog show was held in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1859; Britain's Kennel Club followed in 1873 and the American Kennel Club in 1884. Clubs wrote "standards" describing the ideal look of each breed and closed the stud books, so only registered parents could make registered puppies.

A breed is a human rule as much as a kind of animal. Closing a stud book makes dogs look alike, and it also concentrates inherited diseases.

Groups

Sorted by the job they were bred for

historyeconomics

The AKC sorts its breeds into seven groups by original work: Sporting (finding and fetching birds), Hound (hunting by nose or by sight), Working (guarding, pulling, rescue), Terrier (going after vermin), Toy (companions), Non-Sporting (everything else) and Herding. As of January 2026 the AKC recognizes 205 breeds; the world federation FCI, based in Belgium, recognizes far more, sorted into ten groups. Landrace dogs, shaped by place and survival rather than written standards, belong to no club at all.

The job explains the body: long legs for running, short legs for burrows, thick coats for snow, and a strong urge to chase, dig or herd that pet owners still have to manage.

Today

The price of a closed gene pool

biology

Many breeds carry inherited diseases far more often than mixed dogs: heart disease in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, cancer in Golden Retrievers and Bernese Mountain Dogs, breathing problems in flat-faced breeds, back disease in Dachshunds. Genetic tests now exist for dozens of conditions, and responsible breeders test parents before breeding.

The health note on every card is a starting point for questions to ask a breeder or a veterinarian, not a diagnosis.

The catalog

131 dog entries in the catalog, 7 of them landraces or wild-living, counted live. Weights and lifespans are typical ranges from breed clubs and are approximate; health notes name common problems, not every dog or cat.
