Every cat

Cat breeds and landraces, most less than a century old, and the African wildcat every house cat descends from.

For little learners (K–5)

Cats came to farms to catch mice in the grain. A house cat is still almost the same animal as its wild grandparent. Can you find a cat with no tail, a cat with curly fur and a cat that likes to swim?

About 10,000 years ago

The cat chose us

biologyhistory

Every house cat descends from the African wildcat, Felis lybica, of North Africa and the Near East. When farmers began storing grain, mice moved in, and wildcats followed the mice. A cat buried beside a person on Cyprus about 9,500 years ago is among the oldest evidence of cats living with people. Unlike dogs, cats were never bred for jobs; they mostly tamed themselves.

Cats changed less than dogs: a house cat and a wildcat still share almost the same body. That is why cats can go feral so easily.

Cat breeds began with a cat show

historytrade & commercialization

The first big cat show was held at the Crystal Palace in London in 1871, organized by the artist Harrison Weir, who wrote the first standards for judging cats. Most cat breeds date from the 1900s; many were founded on a single kitten with a surprising coat or shape. Two main registries in North America are the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA, founded 1906) and The International Cat Association (TICA, founded 1979).

About nine in ten pet cats are not pedigreed at all: they are domestic shorthairs and longhairs, the "moggies" chosen by survival.
