Dogs

From the wolf at the fire to the kennel club and the 68 million American households that keep a dog today.

From wolf to dog

biologyhistory

Every dog descends from a grey wolf population that is now extinct. Genetic estimates for the split range from about 15,000 to 40,000 years ago. The oldest undisputed dog is a puppy buried with two people at Bonn-Oberkassel, Germany, about 14,200 years ago. By 11,000 years ago dogs had already split into several lines across Eurasia, before any farm animal was domesticated.

Why would a hunting people let a wolf stay near the fire?

Dogs at work

biologyeconomics

For most of history dogs earned their keep by hunting, guarding, herding, pulling sledges and carts, turning kitchen spits and catching rats. Breeds were chosen for the job, not the look: speed for coursing, a soft mouth for retrieving, a nose for tracking. Working dogs today still guide the blind, find explosives and herd sheep.

Which jobs that dogs once did are now done by machines, and which can a machine still not do?

The breed and the kennel club

biologyhistorytrade & commercialization

Most of the 200-plus breeds recognized today were fixed in the last 150 years. Britain held its first dog show in 1859 and founded the Kennel Club in 1873; the American Kennel Club followed in 1884. Closed stud books made breeds look uniform but also concentrated inherited disease: flat-faced breeds struggle to breathe, and some giant breeds live short lives.

Is a breed a kind of animal, or a kind of rule?

Dogs in American homes today

economicstrade & commercialization

About 68 million U.S. households keep at least one dog, more than any other pet, according to the American Pet Products Association 2025 survey. Food, veterinary care, grooming and gear make pets one of the largest consumer markets in the country.

What does a dog cost over its whole life, and who pays when an owner cannot?
