Bred, sold, kept, adopted, killed

The numbers behind the pets: how many are kept, how many are bred and sold, and what happens in shelters.

2025

Kept: how many pets

economics

The American Pet Products Association estimates that about 94 million U.S. households own a pet. Dogs (about 68 million households) and cats (about 49 million) lead, followed by freshwater fish, birds, small animals and reptiles. These are survey estimates, not counts.

Why do we know the number of pets less well than the number of cars?

Bred and sold

economicstrade & commercialization

Most puppies sold in pet stores come from large commercial breeders licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Animal groups estimate about two million puppies a year come from such breeders (estimate). California in 2019 and New York in December 2024 began requiring pet stores to offer only shelter or rescue dogs, cats and rabbits.

Should a pet store be allowed to sell a puppy, or only to help adopt one?

Held, adopted, and killed

economics

Shelter Animals Count reports that about 5.8 million dogs and cats entered U.S. shelters and rescues from the community in 2025, down 2 percent from 2024. About 4.2 million were adopted. About 757,000 had non-live outcomes, which means mostly euthanasia, plus deaths in care.

What would it take for every animal that enters a shelter to leave alive?

The uncounted pets

economicsbiology

Fish, reptiles and small animals are sold by the million but no national agency counts how many are born, sold, released or die. Shelters track dogs and cats; almost nobody tracks a goldfish. That gap is itself a finding: we measure most carefully the animals we care about most.

Which animals get counted, and what does that tell you about us?
